Burford CEO Christopher Bogart and Principal Mick Smith spoke to Marialuisa Taddia at Law360 about the trend of legal finance providers taking equity stakes in law firms through alternative business structures.
Smith says: "In the extreme, we have done investments directly into law firms where we become like a private equity
investor in the law firm, and that truly is legal finance rather than litigation finance."
Bogart adds: "I could easily see a world in which we continue to provide that kind of hybrid arrangement where in exchange for our financing what you're basically doing as a law firm is you're buying down the cost of the financing by offering up some equity interest as well."
Smith continues: "Firms are going to be receptive to minority investments from people like us."
