Burford was named a finalist by the FT in the category of Managing Legal Costs. The work recognized: Burford’s recently-concluded investment in ShaveLogic’s defense and counterclaim against Gillette, in which a judge ruled that the cash-strapped startup had been frivolously sued by the world’s largest manufacturer of men’s shaving products. Burford’s capital deployment not only helped ShaveLogic proceed with its defense and counterclaim, but in so doing, also dispelled many persistent myths about legal finance, including that it is only used by plaintiffs and that it stokes frivolous lawsuits—quite the opposite.
